FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FOR FOREIGN TRAINED DOCTORS SEEKING JOBS IN THE U.K

Hello
Thank you for the support, comments, shares and nice reviews. Its been a pleasure and I'm more than happy to help.
I have gotten so many questions asked in such a short time since the post on working in the u.k as a foreign trained doctor was released about 24 hours ago and I'm sorry if I haven't gotten back to you but some questions are repeated and the only way I thought to answer everyone at once was to do a general post.

Here are some frequently asked questions.

1. For Nigerians (Is N.Y.S.C compulsory?)
2. Must I do my housemanship before I get a job in the U.K
3. What if I want to do my internship in the U.k
4. How long does it take to study for PLAB 1&2
5.What documents do I need to get registered.
6. Do I have to take I.E.L.T.S
7. Becoming a specialist.

Lets start with question 1.
For Nigerians, NYSC isn't compulsory as the U.K does not take it as NYSC they only take it as an added year of experience and most jobs need you to have at least 2 years of experience post graduation. So it is a win/win for you. In my opinion, if you start with Nigeria, you might as well finish with Nigeria as I believe whatever is worth doing is worth doing well. Most people desire political positions in the future and you know how it gets when they need all documents to certify you worthy of a position. So think of your decisions and do whats best for you. What if you did Nysc before medical school? Then that is fine, all they need is years of experience post graduation. Years of experience is relative, very few jobs may be offered without any year/years of experience.

Question 2.
Must I do my housemanship/internship. Yes if you want a full registration with a license to practice. Without internship you will have to apply for foundation training in the u.k with I.E.L.T.S and a band score of at least 7.5 in each category as opposed to 7 for plab. In this situation foundation is applied for once in a year and if you do not meet the eligibility criteria you will have to wait for the next year and if you have spent more than 12-18 months(not sure of the months please verify with the link below) post graduation before the start date of your foundation, you will be required to write another exam called the clinical assessment exam. Here is a link to the foundation application site for more information. http://www.foundationprogramme.nhs.uk/pages/home

Question 3.
Please refer to question 2 for answers to question 3.

Question 4.
How long does it take to study for PLAB 1&2.
In this case its based on every individual as we are all different. I would say know yourself and know your capacity. Plab 1 can be done with self study but you need well enough time of about 2/3 months to cover all 24/26 courses. If you want to attend an academy for PLAB1 then 1/2 months is just perfect but like I said it is an individual thing. PLAB 2 is more practical. Most courses are for 12-14 days and after the course, I recommend you give yourself at least 3-4 weeks of practice to  know your skills perfectly. For both please get oxford handbook of clinical medicine and oxford handbook of sub-specialities as these 2 books are very helpful.

Question 5.
GMC deals with every individual differently, at the point of application for your license, GMC would tell you what document they need from you.

Question 6.
Please contact the GMC directly for individual criteria on what exams you may be exempted from or refer to their websites for more information. Your nationality and country of study is important when being considered for I.E.L.T.S. Please refer to the link below for more information.

Question 7.
You can become a specialist through any of the royal colleges e,g Royal college of physicians. To be a member you will have to write the different exams for each royal college and then apply to be trained. Please refer to the websites of different royal colleges for more information.

N.B please check that your school is accepted by GMC before applying for PLAB. Here is a link that would help you check. http://www.gmc-uk.org/doctors/registration_applications/acceptable_primary_medical_qualification.asp

For colleagues still in medical school.  Plab can only be done after graduation, Take every bit serious. Medical students in the U.K are very good in terms of how they are being taught. To work in the U.K it means you are in same level with people who trained here, at this point you need to brush your basics, study extremely hard to be a very good and competent doctor as there's so much required of you. If you want to go to the U.S you can start studying for U.S.M.L.E as that can be done before graduation. Make the best of every free time you have. I understand there are lots of distractions, social media doesn't even help but build yourself up to the best you can.

I hope I have been able to answer your questions and more. All the best in all. Please subscribe and follow the blog for more inspiring articles.

  1. Wonderful post Mute. Just one question that was still not answered. I checked the GMC website and saw that plab 2 is fully booked for the next five months. Did you have to wait that long to get a space after doing PLAB 1? I'm asking because I'm considering doing plab1 in UK this June so I can do all the exams this year as I won't be able to make it for the PLAB registration in March in Nigeria.

    1. Hi Dr AD.. the dates on the site seems to to be filled up easily. When you are done with Plab 1 and ur result is out, u ll be able to check for some more open dates on GMC online. And they ll open more dates by mid year. So just concentrate on finishing Plab 1. You ll get a date when u r ready.

  3. Thank you so much Dr. I've been cleared on many issues. I have two questions

    1). What is sponsorship letter?
2). I intend writing plab1 in November and plab2 next year during my NYSC. Do I have to wait to finish NYSC before I register with GMC so as to use the certificate? And will writing that time affect the registration with GMC since I wrote plab2 while still serving?

  6. One should carefully analyse what one will achieve by going under the knife of a well-trained cosmetic surgeon and whether the entire process is worth it at all. Roger Bassin MD

  8. Let's face it, while sure it's exciting, looking for a new job is hard work. The job market is flooded and resources when trying to find hidden job vacancies are few and far between. Refining and improving job search is vital when looking to land a great position.
